Dr. Sylvia Karpagum Selvaraj completed her M.B.B.S. and MD at St John’s Medical College in Bangalore. She received additional training abroad at Blackwater Valley and Hart PCT, Basingstoke UK . Her professional interests include training, monitoring and evaluation, and HIV/AIDS in India. Dr. Bhavna Niranjan Kumar earned her medical degree in Ayurveda from Mysore University. She has more five years of experience in maternal and child health and family planning. Her professional interests include women’s reproductive health, prevention of parent to child transmission of HIV and birth spacing to improve health outcomes. Ms. Rani is the nurse at the Prerana reproductive health clinic. She assists clinicians with exams, conducts draws blood, organizes clinical exams and is involved in community education programs for PHRI. Ms. Rani has trained in Ob/Gyn nursing at C.S.I. Holdsworth Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Prabhavathi works for PHRI/Prerana as a community outreach worker and health educator. In her spare time she also serves as a President of a Women’s Microeconomic Self- Help Group. Prabha is a passionate advocate for women’s rights and a well respected leader in her community. Mrs. Fazila Begum has a teaching degree and worked as a primary school teacher before coming to PHRI/Prerana to work as community health worker. She heads up our community outreach and education programs in the Muslim communities of Mysore. Ms. Begum is fluent in Urdu, Hindi, and Kannada. Ms Padmavathi finished her schooling in Mysore. She has spent her working life in healthcare, with a focus on diabetes. In her spare time she is an artist and has won competitions in Rangoli, a traditional form of folk art using intricate and colorful patterns. Ms. Selvi is the project van driver. She coordinate pickups of women attending the Prerana clinic and takes outreach and education teams into the community. Ms. Selvi has the distinction of being the only professional female van driver in Mysore and is a strong advocate for prevention of violence against women. Ms Mercy Magdalene has completed her MSc in Medical Microbiology at Christian Medical College, Vellore and worked for two years as the head of the Microbiology section at the CSI Holdsworth Memorial hospital. She is currently developing a molecular laboratory at PHRI/Prerana Women’s Health Initiative. Mr Suresh works as a van driver for PHRI. He has received trainin in GPS mapping and currently works in a project which uses mapping technology to improve maternal child health. In his spare time he represents the Chamarajnagar cricket team at district level tournaments. Ms Yashodha MN has a Masters in Sociology and a Diploma in Women studies from Mysore University. At PHRI she specializes in qualitative research and has worked as a focus group facilitator. She also works as a translator and as counselor in Prerana Women’s Health Initiative. Sathya Narayana is a community outreach worker and the Data Entry Operator in charge of data entry for PHRI. Mr. Sathya Narayana has a degree in computer applications. He has been involved in Prerana outreach efforts aimed at advocating for women’s health among male partners. Mrs Poornima Jay Kumar works as PHRI’s Business Administrator. She completed her Bachelors in Commerce at Mysore University. She also works as a computer application staff trainer and accountant. In her spare time she is also artist with a special interest in fabric painting, and is also an avid sports enthusiast. Karl Krupp is the Program Director for Public Health Research Institute. He has a Masters in Public Health from London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and a degree in Communications and Management from the University of Minnesota. As a member of the Board of Directors for Sahaya International he worked extensively on HIV Prevention and Education programs in India and Africa. Purnima Madhivanan received her medical training at Mysore Medical College in Mysore, India. She earned a Masters in Public Health and PhD in Epidemiology from the University of California, Berkeley. Dr. Madhivanan has started clinics for women and children in Chennai and Mysore, India, and is currently the Executive Director of Public Health Research Institute and the Medical Director of Prerana Women’s Health Initiative in Mysore, India. |
